A pendulum is a chain, string, or thread with a weight at the bottom that can freely swing. Pendulums are used for divination, to connect to spirit guides, for spiritual healing and so much more. Pendulums can made from just about anything: the most basic pendulum can be a piece of thread with a finger ring used as a weight. However, when you start to get serious about divination, you may want to purchase a special pendulum made of crystal, wood, bone, or metal as your special tool for connecting to your deepest intuition or working with your guides.

To get started with a pendulum, first you need to select the pendulum that you feel aligned with. I recommend starting with a visual check. First, look through the pendulums that are available and find one that appeals to you visually. Oftentimes people will choose a pendulum because they like the color of the crystal or because the charm at the top appeals to them. This intuitive guidance is actually quite helpful in choosing the pendulum that will work the best for you.

Once you’ve noticed this initial attraction, then read the description of the materials and the charm images and see if they align with your spiritual work. I have often found that that first intuitive hit will lead you to the perfect pendulum that will become your special friend and a powerful tool of divination. Preparing your crystal pendulum

Working with a crystal pendulum or a pendulum of any material, you will first have to cleanse and program it. To cleanse it is simple: rinse your pendulum under water or bury it in a bowl of salt overnight. Once you’ve cleansed it, you can program the crystal by holding it in both hands and focusing on the intention with which you would like to imbue the crystal. For example, you could hold the crystal and think or say, “Bring me spiritual enlightenment and clear messages.”

Using a crystal pendulum for divination

A pendulum is a great tool for tapping into your deepest intuition. To work with a pendulum intuitively, start by setting your elbow down on a table and holding the charm of the pendulum between your finger and thumb. Focus on keeping your hand as still as possible. Ask the pendulum to show you “Yes.” The pendulum will begin to swing. Note the direction the pendulum is swinging (to and fro, side to side, clockwise, or counterclockwise). Ask the pendulum to show you “No.” Note the direction the pendulum is swinging (to and fro, side to side, clockwise, or counterclockwise). Now ask the pendulum if it is open to working with you right now and note whether it says “yes” or “no.” If it says “yes,” you can then proceed to ask yes or no questions that your intuition would be able to discern. If it says “no,” come back another time and ask again.

Using a crystal pendulum for spirit contact

To access spirit communication through a pendulum, the system is the same except that before you begin, ask that only spirits of the highest vibration that will offer clear and helpful communication come forth. This will prevent any trickster spirits from presenting you with confusing or contradictory information.

Ask the spirits if they are open to communicating with you right now and note whether they say “yes” or “no.” If it says “yes,” you can then proceed to ask yes or no questions of the spirits. If they say “no,” come back another time and ask again.
