Description
Bring some good luck into your life with this Roman Janus Coin Good Luck Amulet. The quadrigatus was a medium-sized silver coin produced by the Roman Republic during the 3rd century BCE. The front features an image of the dual god Janus and the reverse features Victory driving a quadriga, or a four-horse chariot, giving the coin its name, with the inscription “ROMA” below.
In the ancient Roman religion, Janus was the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces. Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The gates of a building in Rome named after him were opened in time of war, and closed to mark the arrival of peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, traveling, trading and shipping.
Victoria was the goddess of victory and was a major part of Roman society with multiple temples erected in her honor. She was normally worshiped by triumphant generals returning from war. She was a symbol of victory over death and determined who would be successful during war. She is often seen with or in a chariot, as she is here on this coin.
